Season 2 premiere outperforms the first
This weekend marked the much-anticipated return of The Last of Us. With big expectations set by the success of the first season, HBO confirmed that the series premiere drew 10% more viewers than the debut episode back in 2023.
In the US alone, the episode pulled in around 5.3 million viewers across platforms on the same day — a significant jump from the 4.7 million that watched episode 1x01, which had been HBO’s biggest launch since House of the Dragon.
Creators Neil Druckmann and Craig Mazin have confirmed that this second season will only have 7 episodes, as The Last of Us Part II — the game it’s based on — is much longer than the first. According to them, “one or two more seasons” will be needed to adapt the full story.
The future of the series is set
It’s no surprise that, given the success and popularity of both the games and the TV adaptation, The Last of Us has already been renewed for a third chapter.
In this second part, Pedro Pascal returns as Joel Miller, alongside Bella Ramsey as Ellie Williams. But there are also new faces joining the cast: Kaitlyn Dever as Abby Anderson, Young Mazino as Jesse, Isabela Merced as Dina, Danny Ramirez as Manny Alvarez, Tati Gabrielle as Nora Harris, Ariela Barer as Mel, and Spencer Lord as Owen Moore.
To mark the occasion, Naughty Dog has released The Last of Us Complete — a PS5 bundle including both games, along with a limited edition DualSense controller.
